The first where, once upon a time! Like the St – Denis quadrilateral, the Jacques-Cartier bridge or Chez Schwartz, a favorite place for tourists and night owls in Montreal, Victor “Vic” Vogel is a monument of the Montreal landscape. A friend of musicians, a man of jazz for whom the blue note has been running through his veins since 50 years ago, he certainly gave the jazz bug without really knowing it to several generations of musicians. At the head of a powerful machine that has seen the elite of Montreal jazz pass through, Vic is part of this upper caste who, from Fletcher Henderson to Count Basie and from Woody Hermann to Duke Ellington, his mentor will have given Montreal, less in terms of swing its letters of nobility. Before I met the illustrious character for a series of interviews, there were the 1976 Olympic Games and Maynard Fergsuon, Offenbach in fusion plus a few anecdotes about his rather eventful life!

Vic Vogel is also a man of principles. Unless there is a serious misstep, his musicians or rather “the Kids” are with the orchestra, the fertile ground for all his adventures and compositions. Like Duke who made Side by Side with Johnny Hodges, his star saxophonist, 1+1 =2 is a tribute to these men in the shadows, marvelous watchmakers of a jazz that never ages.

Over the tracks and twice rather than once, you will discover: the finesse of trumpeter Ron Di Lauro, the essence of a ballad with Dave Turner, certainly his oldest accomplice, the complex architect of Joe Sullivan, discreet trumpeter , but oh so effective, the trombonists Dave Grott, Richard Gagnon, unwavering pillars, the baritone saxophonist Jean Fréchette, clever mix of the late Harry Carney/Pepper Adams, André Leroux, tenor saxophonist who did not wait for the number of years to find himself a music stand in the orchestra and lastly, the metronomic Bassist David Gelfand.
Attentive, Vic Vogel the pianist follows the nuances, dialogues, restarts the tempo in this communion which tells the story of unwavering friendships. This is why we always remember Vic Vogel.
